There’s a buzz of activity over at the Museum of Contemporary Art this summer. Home to the art event of the year, Olafur Eliasson’s Take Your Time, and an in-depth solo exhibition of Fiona Foley’s work, Forbidden, the MCA is also showcasing the major gifts donated by art collector, Ann Lewis, in 2009. Almanac reflects the changing practice of Australian art over the last 50 years, comprising paintings, photography, sculpture, ceramics and printmaking. Ann Lewis was the Director of the influential Sydney institution, Gallery A, from 1964 to 1983, and has worked relentlessly to promote the work of Australian artists to an international audience.
Highlights include works by Rosalie Gascoigne using found objects, photographic works by Rosemary Laing and Jon Lewis, and several works by contemporary Indigenous artists, including Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Sally Gabori and Judy Watson.
Almanac: The gift of Ann Lewis AO is at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney from 8 December 2009 to 18 April 2010.
